Here it is. People either seem to think of James as a saint or the devil and there's very little opinion in the middle. Because he is a self absorbed little jackass with a heart of gold. His deepest nature is good, but it is true that he's spent a great deal of time showing off and being a spoiled prat in general. The deep, unwavering loyalty is really only shown to his closest friends. It isn't because he doesn't trust people. He doesn't see the need to prove to anyone that he's a good person because he knows that he is and that's enough for him. For being such a popular little git at school, what people think of him has really never mattered to him much. He liked the attention, don't get him wrong. He soaked it up like a little sponge. But he probably would have been just fine if no one had known who he and Sirius were at the same time.

James comes from a world and a time when the blood status of a wizard matters more than their ability. The idea of a curfew doesn't make much sense to him. Blood purity has never been a thing in the Potter household. In fact, his grandfather was very publicly outspoken against the idea of pureblooded wizards being more important and more powerful. So James grew up believing that every witch and wizard had an equal chance to prove themselves. Sometimes they're just dumb. It's not their fault that he's one of the more clever and talented wizards of his age. But that tends to happen when you come from a loving home with parents that encourage every dream and who have the money to support it.

He might like his pranks and tricks, but he hates the Dark Arts with a passion of a thousand suns. He doesn't give much chance to people who use them. He doesn't offer much forgiveness for them either (sorry not sorry Snape). For a long time, he didn't see his actions as bullying at all. Which, he still has trouble with sometimes. But he's learned to scale it back big time, and to realize when he's crossing the line between an actual silly thing and just plain being a turd. He's grown up, but that could really be expected as he's getting older and coming to prioritize better and having had more responsibility, something that he thrives under. He needs to be held accountable or yes, he will just run wild like a demented hooligan. Especially with Sirius-- they just egg each other on.

He's done a lot of growing up in the past two or three years, that's true but he is still a twenty year old kid and that's important to keep in mind. He's not an old man. He still makes mistakes. He still has this naive belief that everything is going to be okay if they all just try hard enough. Safe to say that he's not jaded or cynical. He would consider it the worst betrayal to ever mistrust one of his friends. He would die for any of them and it only makes sense to him that they'd do the same. Which is again where his sometimes lack of grey area comes into play. You're either with him or against him.

He's loyal as fuck have I said that. Cause he is. You mess with one of his boys or Lily and you mess with him.

history
and I'll try not to sing out of key

Family Fleamont Potter (father), Euphemia Potter (mother), Sirius Black (basically adopted brother)

characters from this verse: There's not a whole lot of difference in his history before he left Hogwarts. His parents still spoiled him rotten. He and Sirius became fast best friends on the train. The boys still became Animagi for Remus. They still wrote the Marauder's map. James still severely disliked Snape and vice versa. He still saved that stupid git's life though and eventually became Head Boy. He and Lily started dating (finally!!) in seventh year. He met her sister and the whale.

It's after Hogwarts that his life changed. Without a war to fight, James doesn't have a lot of incentive to do anything. He tried out for professional quidditch and then decided it wasn't for him and dropped out. He doesn't have a real job, because he doesn't need one with all the money his parents have. Without the war, there was no pressure to get married as soon as they did. In fact, he and Lily broke it off sometime in the first year after graduation because she wanted to open her own shop and be her own woman. And let's be real, the curfew caused some tension in their relationship. He's rather miserable without her, even if they are still friends because he's still basically in love with her and doesn't want to date anyone else.

James' parents died in early 1980, which really didn't help his aimless wandering. It just gave him even more money to wander with. He's been in a Mood since. Doesn't matter that his parents were older and the Dragonpox took them quickly. He misses his mum and dad a lot. When they were alive, it was easier to pretend he didn't have to grow up completely just yet. Now he has to. He's the only Potter left now. He should be doing something with his life but he doesn't know what that is yet. Just knows that he doesn't want to do some boring desk job.

Which, like I've said above, means that sooner or later, the idea will get into his head that he can make changes in the Ministry from the inside out. It will fail miserably but Riddle. But speaking out against the unfair laws to half bloods and Muggle borns will start to push him into a more useful direction.

abilities
oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

  • unregistered animagus; his form is a stag. he managed the transformation at 15

  • marauder's map; this was a group effort but he was still a part of it. the map has sophisticated tracking charms and wards built into it that don't seem to fade with time

  • invisibility cloak; not really an ability but it's something he owns and uses quite a bit

Background: @ la wiki

Personality:
Here it is. People either seem to think of James as a saint or the devil and there's very little opinion in the middle. Perhaps it's because he is, essentially, both of these people. His deepest nature is good, but it is true that he really only shows that to his closest friends and not because he doesn't trust people but because he doesn't flaunt it. He doesn't see the need to prove to anyone that he's a good person because he knows that he is and that's enough for him.

Because James comes from a world and a time when the blood status of a wizard matters more than their ability, and there's a reign of terror going on, where people are disappearing, dying, being tortured, being forced to do horrible things and there's only a small sliver of wizards that are willing to stand up and fight it actively. Most people are afraid and they should be and honestly, so is James. He's terrified pretty much every day, especially for the lives of his friends and his wife. Because they're all in the Order and because they're all misfits and seen as lesser by Voldemort and his followers for various reasons which is just the biggest load of shit if you asked him. They're his friends, he loves them and would do pretty much anything for them. Die for them if the situation called for it (and it will when he's 21 and it's his son's life on the line). He's never bought into ideas about pureblood superiority and whatever he might seem, he hates the Dark Arts with the passion of a thousand suns.

He's done a lot of growing up in the past two or three years, that's true but he is still a nineteen year old kid and that's important to keep in mind. He's not an old man, he still makes mistakes, he still has this perhaps naive belief that everything is going to be okay if they just keep fighting. Safe to say that he's not jaded or cynical. He would consider it the worst betrayal to ever mistrust one of his friends and even as it's becoming obvious that there's a spy in the Order, he refuses to believe it. He would die for any of them and it only makes sense to him that they'd do the same. That no one else would cave.

So the devil side of James. He's kind of a prankster. And that's kind of an understatement. He likes his jokes and pranks. Of course he does, he grew up as an only child in a rich home so things people learned from their siblings, he never did. He likes to have fun and to have a good laugh and that's really all it is in the end. There's nothing malicious about his jokes, not in his mind anyway but for a long time there, he didn't see his actions as bullying at all. Which, he still has trouble with it sometimes. But he's learned to scale it back big time, and to realize when he's crossing the line between an actual silly thing and just plain bullying. He's grown up, but that could really be expected as he's getting older and coming to prioritize better and having more responsibility, something that he thrives under. He needs to be held accountable or yes, he will just run wild like a demented hooligan. Especially when with Sirius, they just egg each other on.

There is exceptions to every rule though and the exception to James being a full adult is Severus Snape. Whom he hates with the fury of a thousand suns and someone that he can't pass up the opportunity to strike first against. This is partially because Snape never misses the chance either and James doesn't take things laying down very well. He always has to be in action or doing something, sitting on his hands and taking the passive road is hard for him.

He's loyal as fuck have i said that.

Powers:
James is a Hogwarts trained wizard so by the wizarding world standards, he's a full adult. He's actually rather clever for his age, and noted by his professors for being particularly talented at magic. His wand is apt for Transfiguration and it seems to be his favorite subject anyway since he became an Animagus at 15, a process that takes most wizards at least 7 years and most people who attempt it don't succeed and it can go horribly wrong.

But none of this really matters because at the hotel, he won't be able to perform magic, even though he'll have his wand, and he won't be able to transform into a beautiful, majestic stag.

Do you want a power wipe? Not really but since his magic is totally fucked, it won't matter
Humanization: n/a

Suitcase: Some robes, a couple jumpers and trousers, his wand, his wedding ring if it's not on his hand when he wakes up, his Invisibility Cloak that will just be a normal cloak, a handheld mirror that is supposed to be connected to the twin Sirius has but won't work here.
Surprise? fucking do it
Other Notables: I got nothing.

SAMPLES

Network Sample: [Guaranteed James has spent so much time trying to figure this thing out and what it is and how it works if it's not magical because it's certainly not magical. Muggles made this. Knew he should've taken Muggle Studies but no, he had to go take Divination and Arithmancy like a twat.

Words appear on the screen by themselves. It lights up like a wand would. If he taps the smooth screen, things happen. Muggles are brilliant, fascinating but sometimes they make things that he just doesn't understand.

Finally his tapping reveals something that acts like a mirror and hey. That's new and exciting. Look how pleased with himself he is.]

What is this then, like a tellyvision? Only in reverse. Brilliant but useless really. What's wrong with a simple mirror?
